Clematis overwintering doubts

If you hear people talking about “queen vines”, undoubtedly the matter is clematis. This plant can be divided into three groups: the species that flowers early, the vine that flowers late and there are also repeated bloomers. If you want your plant to return and fill the garden with abundant blooms next season, you are to take care about clematis overwintering.
First of all you have to prepare it for winter. To do that you are expected to snip off all the spent blossoms, or deadheading, with clean garden scissors.
As soon as the temperature outside is about 25 degrees Fahrenheit, you will need to pile a thick layer of straw, grass clipping, manure, commercial mulch or hay around the base of clematis.
You needn’t worry about clematis overwintering in pots even in the climates with freezing temperatures and even if it’s a tender baby clematis. If you are sure that the container won’t be able to tolerate such cold weather, place it in a warmer spot. The pot should be at least 24 inches in diameter and depth so that it could insulate the plant from freeze-thaw-freeze cycles.
Evergreen species are very popular due to the following reasons: they flower, they are scented, there is no need in pruning with these species, and all year round they remain green which is an advantage too. Evergreen type can also overwinter without any difficulties in the event the abovementioned measures are taken.
