Speaking of hibiscus meaning, it should be mentioned that it is not exact, but still people believe that hibiscus flower represents royalty.

Hibiscus Plants – Long Lasting Additions to Your Garden

    Amazing Hibiscus

These are perennial tropical shrubs that are characterized by very beautiful flowers, ranging in size from 2 inches and up to 1 foot. If they are cared for in a proper way, they become very beautiful and amaze everyone who visits your backyard. The shrubs are very interesting plants due to the fact they not only add beauty to your place, but also provide numerous benefits for people’s health.

Only you can decide whether to leave them in containers or transplant into any area of your home garden. Much sun for at least 4-5 hours daily - and your plants will remind those taken from images and pictures of popular magazines.

Rose mallow is commonly known as sea hollyhock and can be a salt marsh plant. It is one of the most popular species for a home garden, as it can be dug out of wild environment and easily transplanted with complete success. The tree like this can grow to a height of 3-7 feet. Their leaves are 3-7 inches long and can be lobed, ovate or even angled. Speaking of flowers, they are four–seven inches wide and are white or pink in color.

Rosa-sinensis is another type worth attention. It can be quite easily grown and cared for without much effort. Even just a little effort pays off in exotic blossom on a bushy plant that has glossy leaves. This all adds a rather sophisticated and tropical color to any place, attracting many hummingbirds.

Rules of Planting Hibiscus from Seeds or Cutting

How to plant it? For prominent results, the soil it should be planted in must be fertile and drain well. What is really essential for this sort of plant is good drainage, because if left in soggy soil, the roots will rot quite easily. For proper planting we suggest using a mixture of sand, topsoil and compost or peat moss. Such soil mixture is going to be lighter, thus moving the pots with a perennial will be a lot easier.

If you are planting seeds, pH level should range from 6.0 and to 7.0. If the plant is grown outside, mulch the ground, but be very careful in order to keep the mulch about two inches from the shrub’s trunk.

What about transplanting? Such bushes have good root systems. You can see whether the roots are healthy or not by checking their color: if they are tan, plump and crisp, there is nothing you should get worried about. When to transplant hibiscus? The procedure should be carried out in spring, from February till March. This is the period for you to see roots pocking out of the pot’s bottom. After the root ball has been loosened and lifted out, you will see that the roots are wrapped around the pot’s inner part. They should be loosened up and shortened. Cutting hibiscus is essential, if there are too many roots. Replant the bush in a one size bigger pot than before.

When and how to prune? It should be done in August-October, though many gardeners state spring pruning has good results as well. The whole procedure is carried out both to get a much more harmonious plant and stimulate budding. If you want to have a nice looking plant, it is better to establish not more than four branches that are upright and sturdy. Cut back 1/3 of the branch and remove sideways growing parts.

    Hibiscus Care Guide

Hibiscus Care Guide: Tips on Light, Watering and Proper Hibiscus Plant Food

That is not a secret that all types of hibiscus are doing well when in full sun. That doesn’t mean they cannot grow in partial shade, but the flowering will suffer greatly. To do your best, give your plant 6 hours of sun daily. In case you are in the area with hot summer and strong sunlight, provide shade during the day’s hottest part. If you keep it in pot in your house or apartment, place it near a south-facing window to get adequate light. If no direct light comes though the windows, use supplemental lighting.

Proper caring for hibiscus can hardly be imagined without sufficient watering. The process is mainly divided into two parts: hot weather and cold weather watering. In hot weather the plant uses much water and gives preference to its steady supply. Don’t try to flood the roots or allow them to stand in a pot full of water. However, the bush will have droopy leaves, if it lacks water. Care instructions for cold weather are pretty simple as well. Wet and cold conditions may encourage the development of fungus disease. To avoid possible consequences, water as much as the plant needs. Besides, this is when it is better to let it dry than overwatered. Try to keep the roots warm and there will never be any need to start saving the plant.

Fertilization is another part of proper care for hibiscus. Today many species are sold with a slow release fertilizer that is mixed into the soil. Those, who are lucky enough to get such plants, don’t have to get worried about feeding them for first months. How to care after that? Feed it on a regular basis, using diluted fish emulsion every other week. Don’t forget about hibiscus plant food and your bushes will remain healthy and beautiful.

Top Indoor and Outdoor Growing Tips

How to grow hibiscus? The question has several answers. To choose one you should first decide where you are going to keep the bush. For consistent production of hibiscus indoor never transplant it into a big container. If you do transplant it, it will remain healthy, but will spend a lot more energy to produce roots, not flowers. You may not see flowers until the roots have reached the pot’s bottom. The cultivation will bring great results, if the plant is grown in climates with typical temperature of 30 degrees Fahrenheit or a little bit colder.

In warmer areas the shrubs can be placed outdoors in gardens, but it is important to protect them on nights cooler than 30 Fahrenheit. You can also insert long stakes around it and drape burlap covering them without touching the leaves. And in the morning you should remove the cover. Such simple rules of propagation will definitely help you a lot.

Hibiscus Diseases and Pests. Should We Treat the Yellow Leaves Hibiscus Has?

Yellow leaves the plant gets with time usually mean that these leaves are getting old and soon will be replaced. If there are too many yellow leaves, this means the bush is stressed. The commonest reasons of the stress occurrence are:

    • pest infestation
    • under-watering
    • drastic environmental changes
    Hibiscus Diseases and Pests

Usual pests that plague the plant in the majority of areas are spider mites, aphids and whiteflies. Mealy bugs also lead to a number of problems, mainly because they attract lots of ants. Aphids are pretty small insects, but they appear in great numbers. They feed on the sap inside the plant and drain the strength from it.

Whiteflies are usually found under the plant’s leaves, where they lay their eggs. This usually leads to hibiscus leaves curling. These insects are now referred to as the most problematic pests, as they are resistant to the majority of pesticides. Spider mites feed on the moisture that is inside the plant. The main problem is that they are immune to normal pesticides. Spider mites are pretty common, but are mostly in areas with a rather dry and hot climate. If the leaves of your plant have holes and are discolored, you are going to deal with this type of insects.

There are many various solutions that can help to prevent or treat such infestation. These are soap and water solutions, commercial pesticides or many physical means like diatomaceous earth, for example.

Speaking of hibiscus diseases, it should be pointed out that there are many of them. To the most serious ones belong the following:

    • Botrytis
    • Myrothecium Roridum
    • Phytophthora
    • Pseudomonas Cichorii
    • Black Spot

Botrytis affects the buds, making them soon turn brown and drop off before opening. The disease like this affects the foliage as well. Myrothecium Roridum attacks weakened plants and is accompanied by necrotic tissue, growth dying and leaves falling. Phytophthora occurs when the soil is left dry during warm months. For preventing a soil-borne disease like this one drain the soil well.

Pseudomonas Cichorii is a fungus that is characterized by discolorations on infected plants, cracking areas on affected plant parts. Black spot is another fungus that happens when the plant is left in damp conditions. Soon leaves become yellow and fall off. To escape these conditions, take proper care of your plants.
